Animal paradise

The Oostvaardersplassen lake area, the largest wetland scenic area in the Netherlands, is a true paradise for birds. Consisting mainly of extensive pools and untouched marshland, this is the breeding ground of graylag, spoonbill, cormorant, various heron species, tufted duck, goosander and bluethroat. Heck cows, konik horses and red deer graze on the desolate pastures. Entering this area is not permitted, but there are various other ways to enjoy this singular natural environment. There are special bicycle and hiking routes bordering the area, and the Oostvaardersdijk and Knardijk dykes provide a wonderful view of the marshland. If you want an even better look, try one of the hides which allow you to see everything from up close without disturbing the birds. See even more animals when hiking or cycling through the Natuurpark Lelystad (nature park); a wonderful part of the countryside with wild animals all around. Feast your eyes on Przewalski horses, wild boars, storks, Pere David deer and otters - just some of the varied fauna that inhabits  Natuurpark Lelystad.
