Fish and traditional costume

Fish is inextricably connected to Urk, but tasty and fresh fish is not the only thing that is typical of this village. Formerly an island in the Zuider Zee, Urk has a history of over 1000 years. The picturesque town centre is located on a boulder clay mound and is thus higher than the newer part of Urk. It is clear that everyone preferred to live high on the mound; it was entirely packed, resulting in small and narrow houses in a maze of alleyways (or ginkies as the Urk inhabitants call them). Take a guided ginkies tour to see these alleyways. The guide knows all about the stories and legends of Urk. People often think that Urk inhabitants always wear traditional costume, but in fact this is an exception, so be sure to visit the traditional dress display in the 't Oude Raadhuis Museum.
