Marknesse
Marknesse, with 4,000 inhabitants, is the largest green village. In 1942 the village was built as barracks camp village B, and renamed Marknesse a year later. In 1948 the actual construction of the village was started. The name Marknesse comes from Maronesse or Marcnesse, which, according to ancient records, is supposed to have been near Urk and Schokland. The streets, running due north and south from the village square, are crossed by wide tree-lined lanes, making them a remarkable sight.A number of prestigious institutes for scientific research are located here, among them the National Laboratory for air and space travel, the German-Dutch Wind Tunnel Foundation and the Geomatica Park. The northern part of the province of Overijssel, with its attractive areas of natural beauty, is a 15-minute drive away, and can easily be reached by bicycle.
The Noordoostpolder Tourist information centre provides the free Marknesse walking route brochure ‘In het licht van de pioniers’ (Through pioneers’ eyes). This brochure gives a description of a route that takes in the historic and attractive places in Marknesse. Through information plaques, which are located at the various sites, an impression is given of life in the early pioneering days.
