Espel
The name Espel was derived from the town of Espel, Espelberg or Espelo, which used to be situated north of Urk. This area was later flooded by the sea. At the base of the Noordoostpolder dike in Espel, there is a large windmill park with 50 windmills, right on Lake IJssel. When visiting Espel in spring, you will be treated to the beautiful site of many flowering bulb fields, which together are reminiscent of a Mondriaan painting. This villagescape is dominated by a monumental mooring post by the water, a church, shops, a café and restaurant, and a bowling alley with competition lanes.
